Detachment and then attachment

Developing a sense of detachment from the world, helps me realize the futility of the struggle in the world. I do understand that in the true sense, we really don't have control over what transpires in our day to day activities and results. I think to JUST BE, do the best we can is how I can take back 'control'.

It dawns upon me, then - why all these ambitions and desire for achievements? I should truly let them just be too, as one day, as I move onto the next life, all that really matters is how good have I been? I think that that is the bottom line.

A CEO and a homeless are measured on the same metrics, HOW GOOD HAVE YOU BEEN? Were you able to do the right things considering the choices you had to make. The CEO is in his current position more by circumstances (than by choice - as the CEO may wish it to be) that were not his making.

I revert back and develop an attachment back with the world, but now know that if I am truly good, that character trait itself will shine forth and everything else will be irrelevant at that point. That is the ONE thing that I should truly aspire to do, and be true to my atman. I don't know what this translates into in comparison to real life situations, but I think it means not bending over and caving in to the situations that life thrusts upon us. Character is what I am talking about here....and as I open a new browser to find an image to embellish this particular blog....

..... and in the next instance God talks to me and validates my theory as I come across this article. Read on.

Phone thief repents after 21 text messages
Mon Jan 22, 2007 2:15 PM ET

BEIJING (Reuters Life!) - A Chinese thief has returned a mobile phone and thousands of yuan he stole from a woman after she sent him 21 touching text messages, Xinhua news agency said on Monday.

Pan Aiying, a teacher in the eastern province of Shandong, had her bag containing her mobile phone, bank cards and 4,900 yuan ($630) snatched by a man riding a motorcycle as she cycled home on Friday, Xinhua said, citing the Qilu Evening News.

Pan first thought of calling the police but she decided to try to persuade the young man to return her bag.

She called her lost phone with her colleague's cell phone but was disconnected. Then she began sending text messages.

"I'm Pan Aiying, a teacher from Wutou Middle School. You must be going through a difficult time. If so, I will not blame you," wrote Pan in her first text message which did not get a response.

"Keep the 4,900 yuan if you really need it, but please return the other things to me. You are still young. To err is human. Correcting your mistakes is more important than anything," Pan wrote.

She gave up hope of seeing her possessions again after sending 21 text messages without a reply.

But on her way out on Sunday morning, she stumbled over a package that had been left in her courtyard only to discover it was her stolen bag. Nothing had been taken.

"Dear Pan: I'm sorry. I made a mistake. Please forgive me," a letter inside said.

"You are so tolerant even though I stole from you. I'll correct my ways and be an upright person."

Welcome to the spirituality blog

This blog is an offshoot of a website that I had conceived as a result of the spiritual grace and resultant inspiration during Shivaratri Y2K (http://www.jyotirlinga.com) on the joy of Shiva Bhakti and my quest for spiritual progress. Not finding the time (yep, bad excuse!), this blog suits me fine in quickly adding content... my spiritual forays and thoughts - helps log them too. My spiritual journey started with Hinduism and it's simple stories/ teachings as far back as when I was a 2nd grader, with Lord Shiva and has now found convergence with Advaitism / Duality. The Advaitism gurus like Bhagwan Ramana Maharishi, Nisargadatta Maharaj; they have provided that spiritual boost of energy in many lagging moments and have tremendously influenced me ... little baby steps at a time... that will hopefully all lead upto a final crescendo. The merits of satsangh are many!
