Teerth Yatra (Char Dham)

My google alert popped this piece of news in my Inbox.
I really do wonder about the true significance of the pilgrimage.
Ramana Maharishi never stepped out of the ashram.
If worship is within us, what do we get out of such a 'charade'?
But all of us have done it at some point.

Meanwhile, spiritually-inclined Rajinikanth left for the Himalayas on April 26 on his annual pilgrimage. His itinerary includes Badrinath, Kedarnath and Rishikesh. He normally goes to the Himalayas in April every year to offer worship at the temples on the snow-covered mountains, do meditation in quiet solitude and walk long distances in serene atmosphere. He has adopted Raghavendra Swami, Ramana Maharishi and Baba as his spiritual gurus. He returns to Chennai on May 16, a day before the release of "Sivaji".

and I got my answer within seconds...

As the ascetic rishi meditating on a hill,
the mountains become the sacred home of Shiva.
The Himalayas, even visually, look like the abode of the gods.
Several Shiva temples are found on hills.
From Kailasha in the Himalayas to Tiruvannamalai in the south,
the country is strewn with hill and mountain homes of Shiva.
By sanctifying them, important watersheds were conserved,
preserving forests and providing water for existence.
So sacred are the hills that no tree on them could be cut.
However, this ban is hardly observed any longer,
and Tiruvannamalai is a classic case of deforestation,
as are the Himalayan foothills,
that were once rich with forests and wildlife.

Welcome to the spirituality blog

This blog is an offshoot of a website that I had conceived as a result of the spiritual grace and resultant inspiration during Shivaratri Y2K (http://www.jyotirlinga.com) on the joy of Shiva Bhakti and my quest for spiritual progress. Not finding the time (yep, bad excuse!), this blog suits me fine in quickly adding content... my spiritual forays and thoughts - helps log them too. My spiritual journey started with Hinduism and it's simple stories/ teachings as far back as when I was a 2nd grader, with Lord Shiva and has now found convergence with Advaitism / Duality. The Advaitism gurus like Bhagwan Ramana Maharishi, Nisargadatta Maharaj; they have provided that spiritual boost of energy in many lagging moments and have tremendously influenced me ... little baby steps at a time... that will hopefully all lead upto a final crescendo. The merits of satsangh are many!
