First Monday of Shrawan - August 2nd

VARANASI: Lakhs of devotees and kanwariyas offered Jalabhishek at the temples of Lord Shiva on the first Monday of Shrawan month.

The city was flooded with saffron clad kanwariyas since Sunday. Apart from kanwariyas other pilgrims also occupied places in the barricaded area along Banspahat and Chawk roads from Sunday night to ensure their entry in the Kashi Vishwanath temple immediately after opening of its doors at wee hours. The queues leading to KVT from Dashashwamedh Ghat and Chawk remained stretched till late in the evening.

The wait for the devotees and kanwariyas standing in queues for reaching KVT stretched when the Yadav Bandhus thronged to offer Jalabhishek. This event started at 8.30 am and continued for two hours. After the completion of this event the doors of temple were closed for Bhog Aarti for one hour. Due to hot and humid weather some of the pilgrims fell ill in the queues while a number of them went impatient. The situation normalised after the doors of KVT were reopened around 12.30 pm. According to ASP (security), Amrendra Pratap the number of devotees, who entered the sanctum sanctorum of KVT, had crossed the mark of one lakh by 6 pm.

Similar crowd was visible at Markandeya Mahadeo, situated on the confluence of Ganga and Gomati rivers, in Kaithi area. Huge gathering of devotees was also visible at Tilbhandeshwar, Mrityunjaya Mahadeo, Kedareshwar, Onkareshwar, Shool Tenkeshwar, KVT in BHU premises and other prominent temples of Lord Shiva.

Apart from imposing ban on the entry of heavy vehicles in city area the men in khaki strictly imposed the traffic diversions inside the city. Tight security arrangements were made near all the prominent temples. The district magistrate, Ravindra and DIG, DK Thakur also camped near KVT to monitor the security arrangements. The cops also exercised hard to control crowd at the ghats along Ganga.

Welcome to the spirituality blog

This blog is an offshoot of a website that I had conceived as a result of the spiritual grace and resultant inspiration during Shivaratri Y2K (http://www.jyotirlinga.com) on the joy of Shiva Bhakti and my quest for spiritual progress. Not finding the time (yep, bad excuse!), this blog suits me fine in quickly adding content... my spiritual forays and thoughts - helps log them too. My spiritual journey started with Hinduism and it's simple stories/ teachings as far back as when I was a 2nd grader, with Lord Shiva and has now found convergence with Advaitism / Duality. The Advaitism gurus like Bhagwan Ramana Maharishi, Nisargadatta Maharaj; they have provided that spiritual boost of energy in many lagging moments and have tremendously influenced me ... little baby steps at a time... that will hopefully all lead upto a final crescendo. The merits of satsangh are many!
